Masterpiece theatre term question?

I was just watching law & order and the suspect, whose british, mentions taking his "constitutional" at 8 and it seemed to involve him walking around manhatten for 45 min. det Green sounds confused by that statement but det Briscoe says tells him he should watch more masterpiece theatre. they never explained what this "constitutional" thing was and its bugging me.
