Driving permanently in the right hand lane?

I don't know how police feel in the UK. We have a similar law in New York (keep right except to p or in continuous lanes of traffic - on a 2 lane limited access roadway). Do the police care? I've VERY rarely, in several decades of driving, heard of anyone being stopped for driving in the left lane. But it's polite to stay in the slow lane if you're not ping someone.
