Experiment with 2 metal strips connected to galvenometer...?

I happened to see a model in some science exhibition wherein there were 2 metal strips (Aluminium and Copper) connected to a galvanometer. When heat (by rubbing hands and placing one each on the strip) was supplied the galvanometer showed a feeble current. Is it due to ionization or some thing else?
