If you were convicted of a crime, and were given these two options of punishment, which would you choose?

HM, I'd have to see if the lashings leave permanent scarring first. If not, I'd take the lashes. If it did, i'd p on the lashes and use my one year in prison to sit back, not pay taxes, get fed for free, read some novels and perhaps do some painting.
